SEGUIN, Texas – The family of the park’s namesake will join Mayor Don Keil, city officials and others for a ceremonial ground breaking for the Michael Thomas Raetzsch Skatepark on Thursday, March 12 at 4 p.m. The public is invited.

“We are very excited to get this highly-anticipated project underway,” Mayor Keil said. “The MTR Skatepark and Park West are going to be beautiful additions to Seguin’s west side that the entire community can enjoy.”

Seguin City Council named the skate park in memory of Michael Thomas Raetzsch, an avid Seguin skater who passed away in 2009 at the age of 22. Michael’s parents, Beth and Dr. Thomas Raetzsch, who strongly supported a Seguin skate park, will participate in the ceremony.

“I know it gives me and the rest of the council great pleasure to name this park after Michael,” Mayor Keil continued. “His parents have worked tirelessly in supporting this project and it’s touching to see the Raetzsch name connected to it.”

The MTR Skatepark will be constructed on the southeast corner of San Antonio Avenue and North Vaughan Avenue. The skate park is part of the larger Park West, which includes athletic fields, a playscape, splash pad, group pavilion, picnic shelters, nature trails, off-road bicycle trail, parking, restrooms and concessions. Park West construction is in-progress and anticipated for completion in late June. MTR Skatepark is anticipated to be complete about a month sooner. Both parks are funded by the 2013 voter-approved bond package that allotted $5-million for park amenities.
