Public Invited to Vote for Name of New Park
Phase Two of Public Naming Contest Set to Begin

SEGUIN, Texas – Seguin residents will soon have the chance to vote for the name of the new community park to be built on the city’s west side. Phase two of the Name the Park Contest begins Monday, September 29.

“We are very happy with the participation during phase one of the contest,” Seguin Public Information Officer Scott Packard said. “The fact that we received so many submissions is a sign that the community feels a sense of ownership in the naming process and the park itself.”

Nearly 200 submissions consisting of approximately 50 different names were received during phase one of the contest. As described in the resolution establishing the contest, City Council narrowed the submissions to four finalists. The names available for the public vote are:

• Hoermann Park: The people who submitted this name said it’s a good option because the Hoermann family owned the property for many years and the site is still commonly referred to as the Hoermann property. (The City of Seguin purchased the property from the Hoermann family for $414,368 in June 2007.)

• Daniel C. Rodriguez Park: The people who submitted this name said it’s a good choice because Daniel C. Rodriguez was a community volunteer who helped underprivileged children and lived near the park site.

• Juan Garcia Park: The people who submitted this name said it’s a good option because Juan Garcia was in local law enforcement for decades, was the first Hispanic deputy in Guadalupe County, served in the military and positively impacted the lives of Seguin residents.

• Park West: The person who submitted this name said it’s a good option because it’s simple, easy to remember, gives a geographic location and eliminates the possibility of offending anyone by naming the park after any one person.

The public may vote via voicemail, online form, e-mail or in-person at Seguin City Hall between Monday, September 22 and noon on Monday, October 6. Voters may call (830) 386-2549 to leave a voicemail with their vote, name, address and phone number. Suggestions will also be accepted by submitting the same information through a form on the City’s website. To access the form, participants should click the large “name the park” link on the homepage of seguintexas.gov. Those wishing to vote via e-mail may do so by submitting the same information to parkname@seguintexas.gov. Votes will also be accepted by filling out a form at City Hall during normal business hours. There is a limit of one vote per person. Votes that are submitted without the voter’s name, address and phone number will not be counted. Voters must provide a Seguin address.

In November 2013, voters approved $5 million in bonds to build the new community park and make improvements to existing parks. The new park will be located on a 48-acre tract of land located south of San Antonio Avenue and west of North Vaughn Avenue. The project will include athletic fields, a playground, splash pad, pavilion, picnic areas, nature trials and restrooms.

The naming of the skate park to be built on the same property is not included in this contest. Seguin City Council and Mayor Don Keil will oversee naming of the skate park as a separate matter.

“We have four great name choices and are excited to soon have an official name for the park," Packard continued.
