Project Overview

The City of Seguin is planning improvements to Cordova Road from SH 46 to SH 123 to improve safety and mobility for all roadway users and to reduce congestion. The City is working in coordination with Guadalupe County and TxDOT to move the project forward.

Cordova Road is currently a 2-lane roadway with limited capacity and no shoulders. Additionally, drivers frequently use Cordova Road as a throughway between SH 46 and SH 123. This area of Seguin is growing with several developments under construction and more expected in the near future. Visit https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/46e46ea6ce3347fbb719739375663871/ to learn more about planned and future developments.

Proposed Improvements

  • Widen from a 2-lane undivided road to a 4-lane roadway with a center-turn lane or raised median
  • Add a shared-use path for both pedestrians and bicyclists on both sides of the roadway
  • Realign the roadway at SH 46 to create a traditional 4-way intersection with Three Oaks Road
  • Realign the roadway near SH 123 to avoid impacts to the historic Big Red Barn and existing electrical substation

Additional right of way would be needed to construct the improvements. No structures or buildings are expected to be impacted or displaced at this time.

Project Background

Cordova Road has seen a steady increase in traffic and congestion over the past several years and planning for improvements now is critical to maintain the quality of life for existing and new residents.

Cordova Road from SH 46 to SH 123 currently sees about 6,300 cars per day. Considering the expected growth of the City and planned development within the project area, the City expects to see traffic increase approximately 300% to 25,000+ vehicles per day by 2058. Improvements to Cordova Road are expected to serve the area for 30+ years.

The City of Seguin identified the need for improvements to Cordova Road in 2020 when updating their Master Thoroughfare Plan (now the Comprehensive Plan) following an ETJ swap with the City of New Braunfels near SH 46 and Cordova Road. A key improvement of that plan was to realign Cordova Road at SH 46 and align it with Three Oaks Road to improve safety and access at the intersection and is included in the Cordova Road Improvement Project.

The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) supports the proposed improvements through their 2023-2026 Transportation Improvement Program and awarded $19.7M towards designing and constructing the project. The City of Seguin is funding an additional $5M towards the project which includes a 50% partnership with Guadalupe County.
