SEGUIN, Texas – In celebration of Black History Month, the Seguin Public Library will host a special workshop on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. – noon in the library's Community Meeting Room. The workshop will be led by presenter Kelly “Lola” Wilcox Moore.
Ms. Wilcox Moore is a griot (sacred storyteller), ethnographer, 5th generation Freedmen Settlement descendant, and principal of the Wilcox & Moore Legacy Restoration Project (WMLRP). Her great-great grandfather, Henry Wilcox, founded the historic Wilcox Ranch 153 years ago. The Wilcox Ranch is the oldest, and last, active African American owned ranch in Jakes Colony, a Freedmen’s Settlement in Seguin. The WMLRP works to ensure the Freedmen’s Settlement of Jakes Colony has its rightful place in American history. Ms. Wilcox Moore will describe her work amending America’s history to illuminate truths that have been “whited out” of prevalent historical accounts, as well as that of her brother and cousin to preserve the legacy of the Wilcox Ranch.
She will discuss the importance of preserving history through the written word and provide techniques attendees can use to start documenting their own personal histories. Registration for this program is required. The first 20 people to register for the program will receive a free Wilcox & Moore Legacy Restoration Project Ancestral notebook to use to start their storytelling journey.
A follow-up program will be held on Saturday, March 25th from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Attendees will gather to share their stories with other program attendees and Ms. Wilcox Moore (via Zoom).
