Emergency Communications Center Equipment Upgraded
Improvements Increase System Reliability and Compatibility for Growth

SEGUIN, Texas – Every second counts in the world of police and fire emergency communications. That’s why the City of Seguin recently upgraded telecommunication equipment used by the Seguin Police Department.

The installation of five new APX 7500 Motorola Consolettes, elimination of a T1 line and computer upgrades have significantly improved system reliability at the SPD Communications Center. Dispatch computers were updated to the new Windows 8 operating system and a T1 line replaced with radio wave technology. The upgrades began late last year and were completed this week.

“This project went through extensive planning by the Motorola group to ensure we received the best combination of equipment to allow us optimal service as well as the ability to upgrade for future growth needs,” Communications Supervisor Shannon Dukes said.

Prior to the upgrade, voice and data was carried to dispatch consoles via a T1 line. The fiber optic technology was vulnerable to outages during severe weather. The installation of radio frequency technology corrects this issue and eliminates the recurring costs of leasing the T1 line.

The Communications Center serves as a full-time support entity to the Seguin Police and Fire Departments. The $114,126 project was funded by the General Fund and was approved by City Council in August 2014.

“We are very thankful to be able to upgrade our system and continue to serve the citizens of Seguin,” Dukes continued.
