August/September shows jump in recycling participation

SEGUIN, Texas – Seguin continues to live ‘green’ in a big way! The latest recycling rate reports have shown high participation the past two months. In August and September, 63% of city residents put out their blue recycling bins for pick-up – that’s a 3% increase over June and July (60%).

“Fifty percent of what we use can be recycled, and with Seguin's Curbside Recycling program it takes only two things, your big blue bin and your effort to designate a place for recyclables to be stored before going into the blue bin, like a reusable box,” said Jennifer Gauna, Assistant to the Assistant City Manager.

In August 2016, 112.5 tons of material was collected by Waste Connections.  That’s the third highest amount of recycling collected all year. The last time we beat that amount was back in December 2015. September’s numbers were almost as high with 111.7 tons recorded.

“We hope to see this level of participation and this amount of recycled material, if not more as we move closer to the holidays when folks have extra boxes, packaging and paper around the house. It’s so convenient to recycle thanks to the city’s curbside pick-up service. There’s no reason why we can’t have 100% of residents putting out their blue bins,” said Morgan Ash, Public Information Officer.

Central Park will be getting blue recycle-only bins just in time for Pecan Fest.

November 15th is America Recycles Day and the city will be promoting ways you and your family can recycle more, and throw away less. Nationally, only 34.5% of Americans recycle. Seguin can easily double that – we just need to see 6% more recycling bins being placed outside for pick-up. Watch the city’s Facebook Page @SeguinTx for the latest information. ###
