Firefighters Receive June 2014 Employee of the Month Award
Five Firefighters Recognized for Helping Homeless Person

SEGUIN, Texas – Five firefighters who went beyond the call of duty have been recognized with the City of Seguin’s June 2014 Employee of the Month award.

“These five firefighters are true public servants,” Seguin City Manager Doug Faseler said. “They saw someone in need and went the extra mile to help.”

On March 2, 2014, Station 3 C-shift responded to a call for smoke in the 1800 block of East Walnut Street. Upon arrival, firefighters determined a homeless person had started a small fire for warmth. Firefighters explained to the person that open burning is prohibited and the fire was extinguished. The person told the crew he understood why the fire needed to be put out.

“This was one of those bitterly cold days,” Seguin Fire Department Battalion Chief James Vogel said. “Upon leaving the scene, Engine 3 contacted Medic 3 about the situation to see if they could locate any surplus blankets.”

After being unable to locate extra blankets at the station, the engine crew, consisting of firefighters Jeff Joslyn, Jordan Ghawi, Tabor Mahan, fire apparatus operator Cody Blackburn and Lieutenant Ronnie Dill, went to a store and purchased a sleeping bag. The crew then went to a restaurant and purchased soup. The firefighters returned to the bridge and gave the items to the homeless person. Despite their extraordinary actions, the crew did not seek recognition.

“This was a collective effort by the whole crew at Station 3 C-shift,” Vogel continued. “I only found out about it by reading the report.”

The City of Seguin congratulates the firefighters for a job well done!
