Libraries Rock! Let's ROCK this year's Summer Reading Program

The Seguin Public Library is launching the 2018 “Libraries Rock” Summer Reading program.  This year’s music-themed activities and events will inspire all ages to rock out and read.  The festivities begin with the Kick-Off Party on Saturday, June 9th featuring performances by Dierks & Cody Canada and the Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin's Ballet Folklorico group. Summer Reading enrollment begins on June 1st for children, teens and adults.

Research shows that children and teens experience learning losses when they don’t engage in educational activities during the summer, but libraries can help avoid "summer slide."  To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. The Summer Reading Club reminds kids that reading is for fun—as well as for learning. The Seguin Public Library has planned a fun summer for children, teens and adults.

This year the Summer Reading Programs are all online! Register at and begin logging your reading minutes on June 9th! Children earn a point for every minute read and when they reach 300 points and 1000 points they earn a FREE book. You can also redeem points to get raffle tickets for music lessons, LEGOs and more! Earn 1,000 points to be entered for the Grand Prize drawings.

Teens also earn points for every minute they read and redeem points for raffle tickets. Raffle prizes include a $25 Amazon gift card, autographed books and more! Teens completing 1,000 minutes get a FREE book of their choice and entrance into the Grand Prize Drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card.  We will kick off the Teen Program with fearsome fun at the Zombie Ball & Kick Off Party on Saturday, June 16th from 5pm-8pm. Avoid the zombies, find an antidote in the escape room, and compete against other survivors in a disaster preparedness challenge!

We are bringing back the Adult Summer Reading Program. Adults can choose to participate online or complete a paper log. Adults earn 300 points for every 5 hours read, for completing challenges and attending events.  Points can be redeemed for online raffle tickets. Participants using the paper log who complete 3,000 points are only eligible for the Grand Prize Raffle. Logging with Read Squared allows participants to redeem points for online raffles.  Thanks to the support of the Friends of the Library and downtown businesses there are terrific raffle prizes to choose from!

In addition to the library’s regular children's and teen programs, we have planned special events with guest performers and rocking activities: a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo; "Sing" Movie Sing-a-long; The Science of Sound; Lucas Miller, The Singing Zoologist; Jazz Painting; Mariachi Music and Storytime; Nancy and Her Friends present "Road River Rock"; and the Teen Murder Mystery Party.

This year for the first time we are hosting special events for adults.  We will host an Adult Trivia Night, a Grease Interactive Movie Musical and a special performance by Eric Middleton, lead singer of Midnight River Choir and guest Amber Middleton.
