2018 Sip ‘n Stroll Mug Sales Start at Pecan Fest

Mugs to Feature Magnolia Hotel

The 2018 Sip ‘n Stroll mug sales begin on Saturday, October 27 during Seguin’s annual Pecan Fest Heritage in Central Park.  The mugs will then be available at downtown merchants starting Monday, October 29 until noon on Friday, November 30.

For the eighth year, the Sip ‘n Stroll mug will feature a Seguin landmark, and this year, the mug will feature the historic Magnolia Hotel.  The hotel was one of the first buildings constructed in Seguin and served as the stagecoach stop for the community.  The long history and stories of hauntings at the hotel make it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

The 2018 Sip ‘n Stroll committee selected artwork submitted by Dina Scales, a retired art teacher with Seguin ISD and current member of the Seguin Art League.  The artwork is a colored pencil drawing of the northern façade of the hotel.  This is the first year the mug will feature a pencil artwork versus a painting.

“I enjoy making all types of art,” said Scales, “I usually have at least five projects going at once.  I love to draw and paint, make origami, build mobiles and chimes, sew, wood burning and more.”

That love for art began at an early age for Scales, making a variety of crafts as a child and then enjoying giving them to family and friends.

“My mom said that crayons, playdoh and books were my favorite things when I was small.  I’d paint pictures on rocks and popsicle sticks, and make necklaces out of pecan blooms,” said Scales.

From her early craft projects, Scales went onto become a professional artist, teaching generations of students about art at Seguin ISD.  After retiring, her and her husband have been focusing on opening their own business.

“I have been busy making all types of art, gifts, cards, clothing, mobiles and more, for the store,” said Scales, “My husband, Eddie, and I like to create art and furniture projects together and so in the near future we are opening the Zippville Emporium.”

After seeing the call for artwork to feature the Magnolia Hotel on the Sip ‘n Stroll mug, Scales was intrigued by the building and decided it would be a fun project.

“I drove to the Magnolia Hotel to get a good look at detail and the surrounding area including streets, landscape and fencing.  I took pictures to help ma and also researched past and present pictures,” said Scales.

Beginning on October 27, the 2018 Sip ‘n Stroll mugs can be purchased for $15.00 at Pecan Fest and various local businesses in and around downtown Seguin.

“The mugs have become a collectible with many people purchasing a mug from each year,” said Kelly Schoenvogel, a member of the Sip ‘n Stroll Committee, “And we strongly encourage people to purchase their mugs early as we have sold out in the past.”

Sip ‘n Stroll is on Friday, November 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and visitors to downtown brandishing the 2018 Sip ‘n Stroll mug can sample over 20 varieties of homemade hot cocoas at downtown businesses.  Additionally, there will be pictures with Santa, entertainment, wagon rides, and more.
Sip ‘n Stroll is part of Holiday Stroll, a three day event in historic downtown Seguin on November 29 – December 1. Thursday November 29 kicks off Holiday Stroll with the lighted Holiday Parade at 6:30 p.m.  Friday evening is the Sip ‘n Stroll and Saturday, December 1 will round out Holiday Stroll with the North Pole Stroll, featuring family friendly activities held in Central Park from 10 am until 2 pm.
