TLU Students Recognized for Income Tax Preparation Assistance

SEGUIN, Texas – Seguin Mayor Don Keil presented a proclamation on Monday, May 13 to a group of Accounting students at Texas Lutheran University who volunteer their time to help others in the community with income tax preparation.

Under the leadership of TLU Professor, Dr. Sally Cook, the students helped 245 families (and volunteered nearly 2,000 hours) to prepare free income taxes for citizens of Seguin this tax season.

Based out of the TLU Accounting Department and the local Texas Workforce Office, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is an annual initiative sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service to provide free tax-preparation services for retired and low-income taxpayers of Seguin using IRS-Certified Volunteer Tax Preparers. The local VITA Program has been helping citizens with tax preparation for the past 12 years.

The VITA program has proven successful in assisting individuals and families identify tax credits they are eligible for in order to maximize refunds and bring critical dollars back to the community.
