Seguin Police Department Seeking Applicants for  Citizens Police Academy

SEGUIN, Texas – The Seguin Police Department is giving citizens an opportunity to learn all about being a police officer during its upcoming Citizens Police Academy.

The Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is a free program that educates Seguin residents about the police department and prepares them to be ambassadors of the Seguin Police Department within the community.

During the 10-week course, participants will learn about topics ranging from criminal law, crime scene investigations, SWAT and patrol tactics to use of force. The group will also take field trips to facilities such as the Guadalupe County Juvenile Probation and the Guadalupe County Jail. The final class includes a trip to the SPD firearms range and training facility, providing students an opportunity to learn firearms safety and the basics of firing weapons. Participants will also have a chance to ride-along with a patrol officer during the academy.

“Our Citizens Police Academy program is a great way to establish a link between the Seguin Police Department and the community,” said Lt. Mike McCann. “Many of the classes are hands-on, allowing participants to apply what they’re learning,” he continued. “Academy participants will also be able to participate in a ride-along program with a Seguin Police Officer to experience things first hand. This is just one more way the SPD engages with our citizens and strengthens police-community relationships” he said.

The spring CPA class will be held Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm with one Saturday at the range. The class begins Thursday, April 8, 2021.

Online applications are available at on the Police Department’s Crime Prevention page or can be picked up from the Seguin Police Department, 350 N. Guadalupe. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to participate. All applicants will undergo a background check. Space is limited to the first 12 applicants.
